MATERIA is a design studio based in New England that focuses on crafting furniture, lighting and objects that amplify the inherent beauty found in raw, elegant materials such as stone, brass, calfskin, parchment, steel, porcelain and wood.

Taking its name from the Latin word for matter, MATERIA strives to reduce each form in their collection to its essential structural elements while speaking directly to each object's composition.

Drawing from their combined backgrounds in choreography, fashion, landscape design and woodworking, owners Megan Sommerville and Matt Ensner have developed an intuitive and responsive visual language which is at once organic and refined.

Since its inception in 2009, MATERIA has maintained a core ethos that prioritizes active participation in its local economy and environment. Through the ongoing development and support of regional manufacturing relationships with a small group of Northeastern based artisans who supply the company with their porcelain, calfskin, textiles, handblown glass, custom brass components, hardwood and upholstered furniture pieces, MATERIA continues to grow with this foundational commitment in focus.
